Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring
The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) is a ballet and orchestral concert work from 1913 by the Russian - French - American composer Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971). It caused a notorious scandal on its first performance in Paris, but is now seen as a landmark of 20th century classical music. Stravinsky's score contains many novel features for its time, including experiments in tonality, metre, rhythm, stress and dissonance. Back in the eighties, this was the work that eventually kicked open the door to 20th century music for me. The work is in two movements (Adoration of the Earth / The Sacrifice) and the average playing time is 32 minutes (AllMusic). I have two versions, of which I have a slight preference for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Antal Dorai on a Decca/London CD.
