Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky
Alexander Nevsky, Op. 78, is a cantata for mezzo-soprano, chorus, and orchestra from 1939 by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953). It is one of the few examples of (re-worked) film music that has found a permanent place in the standard repertoire. This work is generally seen as one of the most renowned cantatas of the 20th century. The piece is in seven movements (See Wikipedia for details), of which the sixth ("The Field of the Dead") for mezzo-soprano and orchestra is the most poignant. The average playing time is 34 minutes (AllMusic). I have the version by Elena Obraztsova and the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Claudio Abbado on a Deutsche Grammophon CD.
