Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of ten pieces (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed in 1874 for piano by Russian composer
Modest Mussorgsky (1839 - 1881). It was inspired by ten paintings by Viktor Hartmann. It is one of Mussorgsky' most famous works, even more in the orchestrated version by Ravel (see next entry). The work is described in detail in the
Wiki article and the average playing time is 33 minutes (
AllMusic). I have two versions, of which I have a slight preference for Vladimir Ashkenazy on a Decca/London CD.
