Respighi - Pines of Rome

Pines of Rome (Pini di Roma) is a symphonic poem written in 1924 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879 - 1936). It was the second of the Roman trilogy. There are four movements, each depicting pine trees in four locations in Rome at different times of the day. This was the first composition to feature pre-recorded sounds, in this case the singing of a nightingale played by gramophone. For more detailed information see the Wiki entry. The average playing time is 19 minutes (AllMusic). I have three versions, of which I have a slight preference for the one by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal under Charles Dutoit on a Decca/London CD.
